About a family and a secret they hide.  Produced by Necessary Angel alway intriguin.  How they will actually translate Ondaatje’s book into a theatre performance. Strong cast. Justin Rutledge has composed and performs the music as well as portrays one of the characters.

What: ST. CARMEN OF THE MAIN

Where: at the Bluma Appel Theatre.

When: Opens Thursday, Feb. 10, at 8:00 pm

Why: Witten by Michel Tremblay about Carmen, a country and western singer who comes back to Montreal from Nashville to reacquaint herself with her seedy old haunts. This country is full of premiers of Canadian plays. Getting a second production is the challenge. This is only the second production in Toronto since 1977. It’s directed by Peter Hinton, a smart director.

 What: THE SECRET GARDEN

Where: Royal Alexandra Theatre.

When: Opens Sunday, Feb. 13 at 2:00 pm

Why: A musical based on the beloved book by Florence Hodgson Burnett. A lonely orphan girl discovers a secret garden on the grounds of her uncle’s manor and all its surprises. Source material is a great yarn. It’s adapted for the stage by Marsha Norman who won a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical.  This is a musical for kids as well s adults. I think that’s rare.
